  •   Money motivated trade – Trade then accelerated travel
  •   Travel was climaxed by invention the wheel
  •   Ancient Egypt conducted cruises from Alexandria

  •   Pyramids started attracting visitors in 1600 BC
Medieval evidence of travel
  •  Can be traced back to the history of Sumaria and ancient Egypt.
  •   Driven by need for a place to stay, away from home
  •   Intercultural trade created need for mass movement over long distances
  •   Along the routes, certain stopping points (oasis, or mountain passes)
  •   Junctions were also popular stopping points and grew into trading centers and eventually into cities
  •   Routes without junctions developed journey segments (max. distance covered in a day depending on means)
  •   At these centres, need arose for lodging facilities. These facilities began a tradition of hospitality that endures today
  •   Innovations sprung up, with innkeepers incorporating F&B services .
  •   Industrial revolution in 18th Century created new modes of transport further improving travel
  •   With the existing demand, the wealthy and landed aristocracy begin to view many spare rooms as potential for income to maintain these expensive holdings.
  •   There emerged English inns and colonial inns with the latter accepting anyone willing to pay and former accepting members of the aristocracy.
Growth of Inns to support travel
  •  Olympics games in Greece motivated more travel
  •   Also Religious travel to St. Peters in Rome
  •   Greek inns provided support during travels
  •   Guests carried own towel down street to nearest public bath
  •   Cloths were taken care of as they bathed
  •   An attendant sloshed water on him as guest bathed
